چکیده

Sea surface temperature imagery, ship-based surveys, and moored current meters described the passage of a Tortugas Eddy as it moved east at ca. 6 kmday 1 through the southern Straits of Florida (SSF). In mid-April 1999 the eddy SST signature extended across half the width of the Straits. While in the western SSF, the eddy center was ca. 30 km seaward of the outer reef. The upper pycnocline, the subsurface chlorophyll a maximum (SCM), and nutricline shoaled from ca. 80m at the eddy edge to o60m at the center. Maximum chlorophyll a concentrations in the SCM were highest near the eddy center, at 1mgm , although the depth-integrated concentrations (mgm ) were similar across the feature. Nutrientdensity relationships show nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, and silicate decreased to detection limits at sto25:0; the SCM was centered near this isopycnal surface. As the Eddy passed Looe Key (81.51W) the alongshore currents reversed to the west. During this period high-nutrient, cool waters shoaled near the bottom on the outer reef. By early May, the eddy SST signature was compressed into a thin band of cool surface waters off the Middle to Upper Keys. As the feature moved towards shore in the Middle to Upper Florida Keys, the nitrate+nitrite and chlorophyll concentrations increased in bottom waters along the outer reef. Processes such as internal tidal bores and breaking internal waves are likely responsible for delivering nutrients from Tortugas Eddies to the outer reef in the Middle to Upper Keys. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Vertical Distribution of Zooplankton and Copepod Community Structure in the Straits of Malacca

Vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass and abundance, copepod taxonomic composition and species diversity were analyzed at eight stations during an oceanographic expedition along the Straits of Malacca. Samples were collected in vertical hauls (140 μm mesh using 45 cm diameter NORPAC net) from four depth strata. Zooplankton biomass was higher at 10-20 m depth in the central and southern p...

Using age to evaluate reproduction in Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, in the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas, United States

For many species of lobsters, size at sexual maturity varies across spatially separated populations. This is so for two populations of Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, in southern Florida, where females from open-fishing areas around the dry Tortugas mature at a larger size than females from open-fishing areas in the Florida Keys. Variations in onset of maturity between populations of ...

Heavy Metals in Neuston from the Straits of Malacca

Heavy metals cadmium, lead, copper and zinc in neuston were analyzed from samples collected with a modified neuston net (310 μm mesh size) during an oceanographic cruise from July 29 to August 8, 2000 in the Straits of Malacca. The period of sampling coincided with South-West (SW) monsoon. The heavy metal concentrations in neuston were relatively low: ranging from 1.19-1013.70 μg g-1 wet weight...

Use of neurolipofuscin to determine age structure and growth rates of Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus in Florida, United States

we histologically determined lipofuscin content in eyestalk neural tissue to estimate the age and growth of Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) in Florida, United States. Neurolipofuscin was measured from size-stratified samples of 145 lobsters from the Florida Keys and 119 lobsters from the Dry Tortugas, the two main fishing areas in Florida. Modal analysis of the neurolipofuscin concent...

Colour morph of a probable queen angelfish Holacanthus ciliaris from Dry Tortugas, Florida.

An unusual colour morph of a probable Holacanthus ciliaris was observed in Dry Tortugas, Florida, which can possibly be explained by recessive homozygosity, however, further testing is necessary. This variation of H. ciliaris has previously only been described at St Paul's Rocks, Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
